News - 10/01/2009 - ViaSat agrees to acquire WildBlue Communications
Today ViaSat, WildBlue’s primary technology partner, agreed to acquire WildBlue Communications, Inc. The combination of ViaSat and WildBlue will accelerate the growth of WildBlue’s already very successful satellite broadband business.
The combination of ViaSat and WildBlue creates a unique and very powerful combination of leading-edge satellite technology and business operations, which will allow us to dramatically increase network capacity and adopt next generation technologies. With the ViaSat-1 satellite and ViaSat’s next generation broadband equipment, we will have access to an additional 2 million broadband subscribers. In addition, ViaSat’s next generation equipment will also allow us to offer our customers a higher quality Internet access service with faster speeds, more throughput, better availability and advanced services

ViaSat has announced that it will acquire WildBlue. ViaSat is a satellite technology company based in California.
Will the service change?
Even after the merger is complete, WildBlue will continue to be your service provider. There won’t be any changes to your service or your bill, which will still come from WildBlue. There is a press release on the wildblue.com website that provides details about the merger.

Why are they merging?
One of the reasons is that ViaSat has been building a new satellite with very high capacity. WildBlue will be able to use this satellite to provide a higher level of service to its customers. It is scheduled to launch in early 2011.
